Hotel Edison Doorknob Set

Heavy cast brass doorknob set from the iconic Art Deco Hotel Edison in New York City. The knobs feature stacked concentric layers with an incised center that seems to be a stylized monogram for the hotel itself. The hotel still stands to this day and is considered a gem of New York’s once illustrious art deco period. It is located at 228 W. 42nd St. in the Theater District. The hotel opened in 1931 with 26 floors for up to 1,000 guests. The architect, Herbert J. Krapp is well known for his work with theaters. The hotel is featured in a number of films including The Godfather, Bullets Over Broadway and Birdman.

Named in honor of Thomas Edison, Edison himself hit the button in 1931 to turn the lights on at the hotel’s opening.

The doorknobs measure 2 1/4″ diameter. They fit on an adjustable threaded shaft. One knob is secured with a pin and nut. The pin is a common feature for extra security on exterior doors, which would make sense in a hotel. This pin does not appear to go through the shaft, but is bent over into the groove in the center of the shaft. It may be removeable, but would take some work. There is a fair abount af adjustability in the second doorknob, which allows for a minimum 2″ distance up to 2 3/4″(measured without door plates).
