Chicago Knob and Plate

Solid cast bronze door plate and matched round doorknob by Chicago Hardware. Clean and simple design. Cir. 1895. The plate is oversized, measuring 8 5/8″l x 2 1/2″w. There is no keyhole. The knob measures 2 1/4″diam. It features the unique base used by Chicago Hardware which fits into the catch of the Chicago lock box.  This knob can only be used with other Chicago Hardware pieces. A few minor surface scratches, but overall excellent condition for age.

Chicago Hardware

Chicago Hardware is best known for manufacturing the unique Niles doorknob and lock setup. Hence, it is sometimes referred to as Niles Chicago hardware. Patented in 1878, it was soley produced by Chicago Hardware and is not interchangeable with other brands. The Chicago Hardware Company along with the Niles patent ended upon purchase by the Barrows Lock Company.
