Description

Cast bronze door plate.

Slightly oversized cast bronze door plate from Fort Dearborn Hotel in Chicago. These were custom made for the hotel and feature an image of Fort Dearborn at the top. Cir. 1914. Possibly made by Sargent & Co? The plate has a slightly unusual setup with the keyhole above the doorknob hole. Above the keyhole is an interesting “button” which seems to be activated from the back. It takes a small 3/8″ square shaft and both spins and pushes out from the back side. The plate measures 8 1/2″h x 3″w.  It is stamped on the back 55088.

The hotel was converted to offices around 1985. The building still stands at 401 LaSalle St. in the Loop district. The hotel also had a mural of the Fort in its lobby.
